Call for Nominations:
Board of Directors Trainee Representative

SAHM is seeking nominees to stand for election as the next Board of Directors Trainee Representative. This position serves as a voting member of the SAHM Board of Directors for a two-year term (March 2026 – March 2028). Nominees will stand for election this November and will be elected by SAHM student and trainee members. The trainee Board Representative, working in collaboration with the Student Trainee Council serves as the collective voice of students and trainees in Board discussion and decision-making, helping ensure that these perspectives are represented in SAHM’s strategic priorities and initiatives. 

How to Nominate

Anyone who meets the eligibility requirements is welcome to self nominate. If you are nominating an eligible individual, the nominator is responsible to notify the nominee. To nominate, the following information must be submit the through the nomination form by the October 31, 2025 at 11:59pm CT (Chicago).

    • Will you meet all of the following criteria for eligibility to serve before the election begins on November 11,  2025?
      • Is in the advanced stages of their professional training and preparing to enter the adolescent health workforce. Applicants should have completed their undergraduate degree and be actively engaged in graduate, professional, or terminal training programs (or equivalent clinical preparation) with anticipated entry into independent practice or the professional workforce within the next 1–3 years at the time of election. 
      • Have active membership in SAHM in one of the membership categories defined in the bylaws as ‘Professionals in Training’, excluding the pre-baccalaureate category.
      • Demonstrate active membership by one or more of the following, attendance at an annual meeting, participation in a SAHM committee, workshop, Special Interest Group (SIG), or a SAHM Regional Chapter
      • Have career aspirations focused on an adolescent health related issue or field.

Skills and Qualifications

To be eligible to stand for election and to serve as the Trainee Representative, individuals will need to possess the following skills and qualifications: 

    1. Be in the advanced stages of professional training.
      Candidates should have completed their undergraduate degree and be actively enrolled in a graduate, professional, or terminal training program (or equivalent clinical preparation). Applicants should anticipate entering independent practice or the professional workforce within the next one to three years.
    2. Hold active SAHM membership. 
      Candidates must be current SAHM members within any of our student/trainee membership categories.
    3. Demonstrate engagement in SAHM activities.
      Eligible candidates will have participated in one or more SAHM activities such as attending or serving as faculty at a SAHM Annual Meeting, participating on a SAHM committee, Special Interest Group (SIG), or Regional Chapter.
    4. Have a demonstrated commitment to adolescent health.
      Candidates should have clear career interests or aspirations focused on adolescent health related issue or field.

Role and Responsibilities

The Board of Directors Trainee Representative serves as a liaison between the SAHM Board of Directors and all SAHM trainees to ensure that ideas and information from trainees are brought to the Board of Directors. The exchange of information is facilitated by the Board of Directors Trainee Representative’s active involvement within the SAHM Student Trainee Council.

In addition, consistent with the responsibilities of all members of the SAHM Board of Directors, the Board of Directors Trainee Representative is responsible for developing and implementing the mission, vision, and goals (core values) of SAHM, for establishing and supervising the implementation of all necessary objectives to meet the goals, for setting policy, establishing formal positions on adolescent health issues and ensuring the legal and corporate existence of SAHM.

The Board of Directors Trainee Representative will be reimbursed for expenses incurred for in-person Board of Directors meetings held separate from, contiguous to, or during the annual SAHM meeting.

Members of the Board of Directors are responsible:  

    1. Set policies that determine the purpose, governing principles, functions, activities, and sources of action for SAHM
    2.  Ensure that SAHM operates within the adopted policies, by-laws and legal requirements
    3.  Review, monitor, coordinate, and evaluate the operations and standards of performance of all Board Members, officers, committees, and Executive Director
    4.  Represent the SAHM membership as a whole in the discussion and voting of all SAHM business (includes being knowledgeable of and sensitive to the members’ diversity of beliefs and opinions on issues)
    5. Provide direction and assist in the implementation of all SAHM programs, including the annual meeting, workshops, and any special projects
    6. Maintain a thorough knowledge of SAHM’s budget and expenditures and monitor all financial activities
    7. Ensure that sufficient funds are available for SAHM to achieve its mission and goals
    8. Approve the annual budget, accept the annual audit report, and approve policies for fiscal accountability
    9. Determine the need for and establish formal position statements on specific adolescent health issues and determine which position statements need to be expanded into position papers
    10. Review and approve all position paper development proposals presented by the Director of Publications
    11. Approve policies that govern administration of all key personnel such as the management staff and the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Adolescent Health
    12. Serve as an advocate for SAHM including, but not limited to, officially representing SAHM at scientific and professional meetings, on professional committees, councils or coalitions, and before the media when assigned by the President or Board of Directors
    13. Assist in recruiting new members and retaining existing members in SAHM
    14. Serve on various SAHM committees, sub-committees of the Board of Directors, and/or working groups, when appointed by the President
    15. Provide counsel, when requested, to the Executive Director and other Board members
    16. Keep the Board of Directors informed on issues relevant to SAHM and adolescent health in general
    17. Attend and informally evaluate SAHM’s annual meeting and provide advice to the Director of Programs
    18. Prepare for and attend all scheduled and called Board of Director meetings.
