Each year, SAHM awards a visiting professorship to an adolescent health professional who has demonstrated excellence in their work and a commitment to advancing the field of adolescent health. The Adele D. Hofmann Visiting Professorship in Adolescent Medicine and Health was established to provide an educational experience in Adolescent Medicine for a group of health care providers who might not otherwise have the opportunity to benefit from the professor’s expertise.
2021 Hofmann Visiting Professor In Adolescent Medicine And Health
Jonathan D. Klein, MD, MPH
Dr. Jonathan Klein is the Samuel and Savithri Raj Endowed Professor, Associate Vice Chancellor for Research, and Executive Vice Head of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Illinois at Chicago School of Medicine. He is a pediatrician and a specialist in adolescent medicine and health-services research. Dr. Klein is recognized for his expertise and scholarship in access and quality of care for adolescents, tobacco control and other preventive services, and for translation of research into clinical and public health practice and policies.
Jon served on the faculty of the University of Rochester School of Medicine from 1992-2009, with joint appointments in Community and Preventive Medicine, and Family Medicine. Dr. Klein designed and successfully obtained funding for the AAP Julius B Richmond Center, a virtual center of excellence involving 7 academic institutions and the AAP, dedicated to the elimination of children’s exposure to tobacco and secondhand smoke. He currently serves as Scientific Director for the Richmond Center. From 2009-2017 he was Associate Executive Director at the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), where he provided oversight for research, tobacco control, publishing, strategic planning and international health initiatives. He joined the faculty at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2017.
Dr. Klein’s research expertise includes preventive services implementation, survey methodology, health services research with clinicians and with children and youth, and community-based program evaluation. He has led and collaborated on development, testing, and dissemination of cancer prevention/tobacco control and secondhand smoke exposure prevention projects to decrease tobacco use and prevent tobacco smoke exposure in children and youth. These studies examine primary care practice and community health intervention trials in large national primary care practice-based research networks. He also is recognized as an expert in survey methodology, and has led and participated on studies which successfully addressed a range of language, literacy and cultural barriers to measurement and research participation for populations at risk. His global health work includes significant contributions to child survival, immunization, and non-communicable disease prevention, including review of programmatic and research efforts to improve use of evidence and translate evidence into practice and policy in low and middle income country settings.
Adele D. Hofmann Visiting Professor Information
The Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine offers this award to provide an educational experience in adolescent medicine to a group of healthcare providers who may not otherwise have the opportunity to benefit from the professor’s expertise. The designated professor will spend 2-4 days at a selected institution, offering training, guidance or expertise to enhance the knowledge and skills of clinical or academic staff within the host institution.
CRITERIA: Candidates for the host site must be members of the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine. The recipient program or site will arrange a 2- to 4-day visit with the Professor at a mutually agreeable time during the year for which the award is given. Site applications will be considered on the basis of the institution’s ability to provide a large local audience, preferably comprised primarily of professionals concerned with adolescent health. Special preference will be given to institutions and organizations that are committed to developing or maintaining educational, clinical or training relationships with community-based organizations. It is desirable for the applicant location to be affiliated with a residency training program so physicians-in-training can have exposure to the visiting professor.
SELECTION PROCESS: Nominations for both the Hofmann Visiting Professor and the host site are accepted from any current member of SAHM. The SAHM Awards: Service Sub-Committee is charged with selecting the Visiting Professor and host site.
BUDGET AND ADMINISTRATION: The award is supported via restricted funds. The award includes an engraved plaque, honorarium of $2,000, and reimbursement of travel expenses up to $1,500 for award recipients (receipts required). The host site awarded the professorship must agree to assume responsibility for travel expenses that exceed $1,500.

This prestigious award was established in 1986 with the first award being given in 1987. In 2003, the Visiting Professorship in Adolescent Medicine was renamed to honor Dr. Adele D. Hofmann for her lifelong commitment to the field of Adolescent Medicine and Health. The professorship is supported by a gift to the Society from Dr. Hofmann’s children, Annie Gardiner and Peter Hofmann. The Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine sponsors this annual event to provide an educational experience in adolescent medicine for a group of health care providers who may not otherwise have the opportunity to benefit from the professor’s expertise. Applications will be considered on the basis of the institution’s ability to provide a large local audience, preferably comprised primarily of professionals concerned with adolescent health.
