  • Explain “BATNA” (Best Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement) and related concepts.
  • Propose ways to negotiate salary, bonuses, schedule, and more.
  • Discuss points to consider before and after starting a job.

About the Speaker: Dr. Annemarie Swamy is an Adolescent Medicine physician and Assistant Professor at West Virginia University and the Charleston Area Medical Center. She is originally from California, KY, which is in a rural area of northern Kentucky. She completed her M.D. and Ph.D. at Johns Hopkins, did residency in Pediatrics at the University of Kentucky, and was recruited back to Johns Hopkins for fellowship training in Adolescent Medicine. She also completed training in Obesity Medicine and is board certified in Adolescent Medicine, Obesity Medicine, and Pediatrics. She accepted her current position in West Virginia to be between her family in KY and VA and for the opportunity to create a new Adolescent Medicine clinic and to teach residents and medical students. She has a special interest in negotiation, and in the past year she has been invited to give lectures on contract negotiation for attendings and trainees in multiple specialties and has provided one-on-one coaching sessions to help others negotiate for favorable terms in their contracts.
